Critically Acclaimed Actress Shelli Boone Taking Her One-Woman Show, “Out West:Women of the Plains” on the Road! Los Angeles-based actress Shelli Boone (www.shelliboone.com) has been tapped to take her self-written and produced one-woman show “Out West: Women of the Plains” on the road. Boone will perform the critically acclaimed play in three states – California, Virginia and Florida. “Out West” depicts seven scenes featuring women of color striving to survive during the migration West throughout the late 1800’s and early 1900’s. Through the use of monologues and music, the audience experiences their struggles with health, religion, love, family, finance and ambition, amidst a turbulent and viciously racist national climate. Boone is first appearing in The Actors Repertory’s 3rd Annual Solo Festival at the Missing Piece Theatre in Burbank, California on Saturday, January 30th at 8pm. The festival features 18 one-person shows, all judged by the audience. On February 6th, she will host a Talk Back Seminar at the Center with youth to discuss the show, its historical impact and give guidance on establishing a career in entertainment. “As a Hampton Roads native, this is especially exciting for me,” says Boone. “To have the opportunity to perform in a place where I grew up, where so many people support me and to also be able to give back and encourage others is very fulfilling.” For more info and tickets visit: www.suffolkcenter.org or call 757-923-2900 As part of a Black History Month celebration, Boone will present “Out West” to students at Burns Middle School in Brandon, Florida on February 8th. “When I started to research the Westward Expansion, I was both shocked and fascinated,” says Boone. “I never knew that African Americans, especially women, played such an important role in developing that part of the country. That isn’t something we learn in school. The Old West is always depicted in movies as white cowboys and Indians. African Americans were everywhere though; we were part of the Gold Rush, we had our own towns, our own struggles. And black women were pioneers! We were the backbone of the wild and wooly West. I want to make sure that children of all races know about these unsung heroes,” she explains. Boone plans to continue touring her show both in schools and theatre venues throughout the country for the rest of 2010 and beyond. Shelli Boone has appeared in over 17 films, national and international commercials, print campaigns, theatrical productions, radio spots and several hit television shows. She most recently guest starred on “Tyler Perry’s House of Payne”, and also appeared on “House MD” and “Southland” in 2009. She was a series regular on “Saints and Sinners”, a primetime drama on FOX’s My Network, and also starred in the Lionsgate release “Holla” which airs on BET. Boone was nominated for an NAACP Award for her stage portrayal of Dorothy Dandridge in Playhouse Theatre Players production “Dorothy and Otto”, and she also played the vivacious Josephine Baker in the musical “When Divas Were Divas”. Boone is represented by The Beverly Hecht Agency and Kazarian, Spencer, Ruskin and Associates. For more information and pictures visit: www.shelliboone.com
