Bloomingdale High School PTSA 2nd Annual 5k Family Run & Walk
    11/28/2009 , Leslie White

Bloomingdale High School PTSA held its 2nd Annual 5k Family Run & Walk in November, bringing community members, parents and the some of the student body together to keep fit, while at the same time benefit a very worthy cause.

Bloomingdale principal Mark West said, “The reason we started this last year was for the Bloomingdale Library attack victim. This year we’re putting together care packages for our troops. It’s all about giving back to the community.” PTSA President Catrina Miller agreed and said, “We do it together, as a team.”

Also together as a team that day were friends of a Central Florida college student who lost her life just weeks before in a motorcycle accident. Friends of Francesca Martino, a former award-winning track team member from Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University in Daytona, came together when they heard about the 5k run at Bloomingdale. “Francesca really enjoyed running and her last race was a 5k, se we want to do as many as possible in her honor,” said friend Andrea Hernandez.

The team of 12 ran and walked the course as Francesca’s mother waited at the finish line to cheer them in. The devotion paid off in a 1st place time in the adult male category for Francesca’s boyfriend, Carl Cunnann, coming in with a time of 22.26.

Coming in 1st in the female adult category was Emily Campbell with a time of 22.49. Bloomingdale student Julie Roggerman finished 1st in the female student category with her time of 22.27, and Josh West came in as 1st male student, finishing in 21.04 minutes. Josh is on the Bloomingdale Cross Country team and is also the son of principal Mark West, who also ran in the 5k.

George Garner, a teacher at Bloomingdale and former track coach, congratulated all 62 participants, encouraging all to stay active. “Hopefully we’ll see you all back next year at this annual event,” he said.
